Frequently Asked Questions

What is India's Vehicle Scrappage Policy?
The Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernisation Programme (V-VMP), commonly called the Scrappage Policy, was introduced to phase out old, polluting vehicles. Petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are eligible for scrapping at Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSF).
What benefits do I get for scrapping my old vehicle?
Benefits include: (1) Scrapping certificate issued by the RVSF, (2) Road tax concession of 15-25% on a new vehicle purchase in most states, (3) Registration fee waiver on the new vehicle, (4) Scrap value payment from the scrapping facility based on metal weight and condition.
How is scrap value calculated for a vehicle?
Scrap value is based on the weight of the vehicle's metal, current steel and aluminium scrap rates, and the condition of reusable parts. A small car typically yields ₹25,000-₹60,000 in scrap value, while larger vehicles may yield more depending on metal content.
Where can I scrap my vehicle in India?
Vehicles must be scrapped only at government-approved Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSF). A list of authorised centres is available on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) website. Avoid unauthorised scrap dealers who cannot issue valid scrapping certificates.
Does scrapping my vehicle cancel my RC and insurance?
Yes. Once you submit your vehicle to an RVSF, you will receive a Certificate of Deposit and subsequently a Certificate of Vehicle Scrapping. These are required to cancel the RC at your RTO. Remember to surrender or cancel your vehicle's insurance policy to get a refund on unused premium.
