Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a rent receipt for HRA?
To claim HRA (House Rent Allowance) exemption from income tax, your employer requires rent receipts as proof of rent payment. Receipts are typically submitted quarterly or annually. If your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, you also need to provide your landlord's PAN number along with the receipts.
What details must a rent receipt include for HRA claims?
A valid rent receipt must include: the tenant's name, landlord's name, rental property address, amount paid, payment period (e.g. March 2025), mode of payment, and the landlord's signature. Revenue stamp (₹1) is required on receipts above ₹5,000 in cash — optional for bank/UPI payments.
Do I need a revenue stamp on rent receipts?
A ₹1 revenue stamp is legally required on hand-stamped receipts for cash payments exceeding ₹5,000. For digital payments (NEFT, UPI, cheque), revenue stamps are not required. Employers generally accept receipts without stamps for non-cash transactions.
Can my parents be my landlords?
Yes, paying rent to parents is legally valid for HRA exemption — provided the property is genuinely owned by the parent(s), rent is actually paid (ideally by bank transfer), and your parent(s) declare the rental income in their own ITR. Rental income from a child is fully taxable for the parent.
What if my landlord refuses to give PAN for rent above ₹1 lakh?
If your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh (₹8,333/month), furnishing your landlord's PAN is mandatory for HRA claims. If your landlord refuses, you must still submit a declaration from the landlord that they do not have a PAN — though this may not be accepted by all employers. CBDT has not provided an alternative exemption in this case.
