Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to issue a GST invoice?
Any GST-registered business (with GSTIN) that makes a taxable supply of goods or services must issue a tax invoice. Unregistered businesses making supplies under the GST exemption threshold (₹40 lakh for goods, ₹20 lakh for services) can issue a simple bill of supply without GST.
What details are mandatory on a GST invoice?
A valid GST invoice must include: your business name, address and GSTIN, invoice number and date, buyer's name and address (GSTIN if registered), HSN/SAC code for each item, quantity and unit of measure, taxable value, applicable GST rate (CGST+SGST for intrastate or IGST for interstate), and total invoice value.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For supplies within the same state (intrastate), GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — e.g., 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For supplies between different states or exports (interstate), only IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate — e.g., 18% IGST.
What is an HSN code and where do I find it?
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods for GST purposes. Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must use 8-digit HSN codes; others may use 4 or 6 digits. Search for your product's HSN code on the GST Council website at gstcouncil.gov.in or on the government's GST portal.
Is an e-invoice mandatory for my business?
E-invoicing (electronic invoice on the IRP portal) is mandatory for GST-registered businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore from 1st August 2023. Smaller businesses can continue with standard invoices. This tool generates standard PDF invoices — for IRP e-invoice integration, use the official GST e-invoice portal or accounting software like Tally/Zoho.
