Each annual increment moves you exactly one cell forward in your pay level's row of the matrix โ about 3% higher, rounded to the matrix's pre-computed figure.
Since DA and HRA are both percentages of Basic Pay, your increment amount also pulls up your DA and HRA โ the real monthly gain is more than the basic-pay jump alone.
Your NPS deduction is 10% of Basic+DA, so it also rises with your increment โ this is subtracted from your gross gain to get your real net monthly increase.
HRA steps up in stages as DA rises: 24/16/8% at launch, 27/18/9% once DA crossed 25%, and 30/20/10% once DA crossed 50% โ the slab currently in force since DA is at 60%.
Your annual increment moves you one cell to the right in the 7th CPC pay matrix for your pay level โ an increase of approximately 3% over your current basic pay, using the matrix's pre-computed figures rather than a raw percentage calculation.
Annual increment is granted on 1st July each year, provided the employee has completed at least 6 months of service in their current pay cell by 30 June.
HRA steps up as DA rises: 24% / 16% / 8% at baseline, 27% / 18% / 9% once DA crossed 25%, and 30% / 20% / 10% once DA crossed 50% โ the slab currently in force for X-class (metro), Y-class, and Z-class cities respectively, since DA is now at 60%.
If you reach the maximum cell of your pay level without a promotion, you continue receiving annual increments as stagnation increments for up to 2 more years, at the same rate as your last regular increment, until promotion or MACP upgradation.
Each pay level actually has up to 40 cells, but the first 15 cover most career stages relevant to a 1-3 year projection. If your current basic pay isn't listed for your level, you're likely deep into your pay band โ check your payslip and contact your DDO/PAO for your exact next-cell figure.
