Frequently Asked Questions

What is HRA exemption and who can claim it?
HRA (House Rent Allowance) exemption lets salaried employees reduce their taxable income by the amount of rent they pay. Only employees who receive HRA as part of their salary AND actually pay rent can claim this exemption under Section 10(13A).
What is the formula for HRA exemption?
HRA exemption is the minimum of three values: (1) Actual HRA received from employer, (2) 50% of basic salary if you live in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% for non-metros, and (3) Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary.
Can I claim HRA if I live in my own house?
No. HRA exemption is only available if you are paying rent. If you own the property you live in, the entire HRA received becomes taxable income — even if your employer pays it.
Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?
For rent below ₹1 lakh/year, self-declaration is generally accepted. If your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, you must submit rent receipts and your landlord's PAN to your employer for HRA exemption.
Is HRA exemption available in the New Tax Regime?
No. HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is not available under the New Tax Regime. It is only available under the Old Tax Regime. This is one major reason many high-rent employees prefer the Old Regime.
