Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI and is it accurate?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kg divided by height in metres squared. It is a quick screening tool — under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5-24.9 is normal, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese. However, BMI does not account for muscle mass, so athletes often have a high BMI despite being healthy.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep organs functioning. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is BMR multiplied by your activity level. TDEE is what you should use to plan your actual calorie intake for weight loss or gain.
How do I calculate my ideal weight?
Our ideal weight calculator uses the Devine formula (most widely used clinically): for men, ideal weight = 50kg + 2.3kg per inch above 5 feet; for women, 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch above 5 feet. This gives a reference range, not a hard target.
What activity multiplier should I use for TDEE?
Use 1.2 for sedentary (desk job, no exercise), 1.375 for lightly active (1-3 days/week exercise), 1.55 for moderately active (3-5 days/week), 1.725 for very active (hard exercise 6-7 days), and 1.9 for extra active (physical job + daily training).
Are these calculators accurate for Indians?
Standard BMI and weight formulas were developed from Western populations. Some research suggests Asian populations face health risks at lower BMI thresholds (23+ for overweight, 27.5+ for obese). Consult your doctor for personalised health assessments.
